Fatah Elects New Deputy Leader in Historic Leadership Shift
The appointment was formalized during the inaugural session of Fatah's newly constituted Central Committee — the movement's supreme governing body — convening for the first time since its membership was officially elected last month at the Eighth General Conference in 2026, spokesperson Iyad Abu Zneit said.
Al-Sheikh becomes only the second figure in Fatah's history to occupy the deputy leadership role. Senior official Mahmoud al-Aloul had held the position since 2017, making him the first-ever deputy head when the post was originally established.
The reshaped Central Committee took shape after Fatah announced on May 18 the election of 18 members to its top governing body and 80 members to its Revolutionary Council — the movement's parliamentary and oversight arm responsible for scrutinizing Central Committee policies and operations.
Among those elected to the Central Committee was Yasser Abbas, son of Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas, according to preliminary official conference results.
President Mahmoud Abbas himself was re-elected as Fatah's president and general commander during the opening day of the three-day gathering.
The Eighth Conference, held in Ramallah, marked a historically significant occasion — only the third time Fatah has convened such a conference on Palestinian soil. It follows the sixth conference held in 2009 in Bethlehem in the southern West Bank, and the seventh in 2016 in Ramallah in the central West Bank.
